BELEZA NYC FOLLOWERS
New York, January 18th, 2010
Dear friends of Beleza NYC,
As you know there was a terrible tragedy in Haiti with thousands of lives lost and still many others missing. Huge international efforts are being made in order to help the ones who are in need. We from Beleza NYC believe that this is a crucial time to unite our Beleza followers in donating whatever they can to the cause of Haiti.
As most of you know, one of Beleza co-founders Mirlet Auguste is Haitian-American. His family and friends who are in Haiti were extremely affected by the earthquake. Some have survived, some have died and others are still missing. He has been receiving calls from his loved ones in Haiti asking for his help. Basically his family is united with other families in nuclear groups inside and outside of Port-au-Prince. There are around 200 people together in these groups as off today. Their houses were totally destroyed and some of them are heading to the mountain sites were they feel safer. They have been mentioning that all international supplies are not reaching them. It’s a struggle to survive. Mirlet has another brother who lives in the Dominican Republic (DR) and went to Haiti for 3 days to find his family. He came back home last night (Sunday) with alarming news. In his words:
“Many people are dying every day because they are not getting basic health assistance. There is very little being communicated to the people there. They are confused in the street and don’t know when they will be able to go back home. I’m talking about babies, children of all ages, the elderly and so forth. They don’t know whether their houses are safe or not. The government has been uprooted by the earthquake, so the people are left with no leadership and unorganized. I came back to the DR tonight and while there in spite of having gone to many makeshift camps, I didn’t notice any food, water, or medicine distributed. Food and water is scarce so the cost of everything has multiplied exponentially. People need to understand that the situation is very serious. The priority for people right now is basic food. Haitians are survivors. Rice and beans will do. People need to know if they need to evacuate port au prince, they need temporary shelter. They need to know which of their houses are safe and which aren’t. This is the time to lavishly spend a lot of money on the unnecessary. Every cent needs to be used to the fullest. This can be done only through good coordination. We need to find a way to ensure that the assistance goes to each and everyone in need or otherwise it will be a matter of survival of the fittest”.
Mirlet has brothers, cousins, aunts, uncles, in-laws and friends who are in deeply need.
Because of that, Beleza has arranged a bank account to receive donations from New York friends who are willing to help them.
His brother is coordinating a local campaign in the Dominican Republic but since there is a tremendous political difficulty to ship supplies from NY, we can only collect money at this time. All money collected will be transferred to his brother in DR so he can buy supplies there and take them to Haiti by car this upcoming weekend. If you can, please direct your donations to Beleza NYC LLC…….. until Wednesday (January 20th) by 6pm. Since this is a local campaign, you will know exactly where and to whom you money went.
Anything helps.
Beleza unites people for the love of world music. Please help us to re-unite Haitian families at this difficult time.
Thank you. One love,
Beleza NYC Team
